Before the start of the 2019 WSL Championship Tour season (and a tragic ACL re-injury and early exit), John John Florence and team landed on the Gold Coast of Australia to dial in the two-time world champ’s quiver for the year.
Along for the ride was coach Ross Williams and John John’s longtime shaper Jon Pyzel. In addition to being there to watch John surf and get immediate feedback on a new model he’d created, called the Shadow, and get the design dialed for a potential world title campaign, it appears that Pyzel’s role on the Gold Coast trip was also being the target of some healthy ribbing.
From getting booped incessantly to watching John putting intentional pressure dings on the deck of his board, Pyzel can’t win. And maybe it’s because he’s so easily flustered that he makes an easy target.
Of course, now that John John has said he’s out for the year and will go under the knife to fix his knee, the preparations being made here take on an entirely different tone. All we can hope is the man gets well and back in fighting shape soon.
