Justin Lee is what we might call a “rad dad,” here stateside. His son, Connor Lee, was competing in the Skullcandy Pro Junior recently at Lennox Head when he busted his board during the quarter-finals. Well, dad, who was board caddying for his son, knew his kid needed his extra stick but he was wearing jeans. The swim was daunting. And his Instagram caption could possibly be one of the most classic pieces of amateur writing ever:

“Now I am sure you’re asking the question, who the F$ck is that!! Yes that’s me, and I am not coming down from a three day bender on the coco and pills [sic], and decided I’d get my gear off in the middle of the Skullcandy oz pro junior in my kids 1/4 final with 300 spectators watching and a live webcast for nothing.

So what am I doing!! Well on @itsnot_connorlee_ very first wave in the 1/4 finals he snapped his board on his second turn and on his way to a good score! He was close to 400-500m out to sea and the commentators said. And I quote, get him a board out there. I had jeans and jacket, and I knew it would have been long swim back in with all that weight. So I ripped my gear off and started paddling out. I get about 30m out and then they call me back in. Causes it’s against the rules to paddle a board out. So this is me stranded back on the beach waiting for someone to get my gear for me. Unfortunately this left very little time for Connor to get waves and was knocked from the comp, he had been ripping in early rounds and it was just bad luck for him!”

Still, a fantastic effort from a solid father, and a solid surfer (see below). The takeaway? The elder Lee’s Instagram handle pretty much sums up life as a dad to perfection: “Stuff doesn’t always go to plan.”
