The Inertia

Typhoon Hagibis slammed into Japan this weekend with devastating consequences. It dumped nearly 40 inches of rain in some places, flooding vast areas around Tokyo and inland. According to Japanese public broadcaster NHK, the death toll is more than 50 people, and the number is expected to rise. Rivers jumped banks and broke levees, flooding communites.

More than 100,000 workers are assisting in the search and rescue efforts. Chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga said in a press conference Monday that 13,000 police, 66,000 firefighters, and 31,000 self-defense force staff are on the ground looking for victims.

As of Monday, thousands are without power and now officials are warning that landslides are likely. Amid all that, however, a few surfers found a silver lining. It’s clear they’re pushing their limits, but they managed to find a few bombs.
