The Inertia

From American Wave Machines’ tech to Wavegarden’s Cove, perhaps one of the most exciting features of prevailing artificial wave technologies is the ability to change waves at the push of a button. In the not-so-distant future, we may find ourselves ordering up our ideal wave off “the menu” at a Surf Park the way you’d order a burrito bowl at Chipotle.

And to keep the analogy going, for those who prefer their bowls (er, waves) with extra meat, Melbourne-based URBNSURF just unveiled what may be one of the heavier artificial waves we’ve seen ridden thus far – a wave they’re calling “The Beast.” It’s the fiercest wave on the menu, a recent press release explains. Joel Parkinson, who recently tested the thing, called it a “challenging barrel… you need to be on your game to make it out.”

Footage emerging from the other full-scale public Wavegarden Cove facility, The Wave in Bristol, U.K., has shown us what the different “Turn Waves” that the Cove tech pumps out look like at different sizes. But, according to Wavegarden, URBNSURF will also feature an aerial wave, called “The Ramp” that’s being dialed in at the moment with the help of Dion Agius.

“It has the potential to be amazing, we just need to refine a couple of details,” said Dion.

URBNSURF tells us they plan to open in January 2020 and are already offering Foundation Memberships that include an exclusive pre-launch half-day surf experience, behind the scenes access, 50 advanced sessions per year, and VIP invites to all URBNSURF events. Other membership and “multi-pack” options will be announced closer to Christmas.
