At the northern end of British Columbia’s Vancouver Island is a sleepy little hamlet called Quatsino. It’s a beautiful place that only around 100 people call home, surrounded by towering trees and glittering water. Bears, whales, and all sorts of animal life share the territory, and as anyone who’s been to Vancouver Island knows, eagles are a common sight. What’s not a common sight, though, is an eagle caught up in the sucking tentacles of an octopus.
“Our staff at our Mahatta West farm in Quatsino rescued an eagle that had bitten off more than it could chew when it tried to catch an octopus,” wrote Mowi Canada, a fish farming operation. “They are used to seeing the wonders of nature around them on a regular basis, but they knew that this was a once in a lifetime experience.”
After a while, the fishermen decided they’d intervene and help the eagle out of the situation. The octopus ended up swimming off into the depths, while the eagle took a breather on a branch for a few minutes before shaking it off and flying away.
