The Inertia

The Eddie Aikau Invitational is one of surfing’s most celebrated events for good reason. As is well known, the event pays tribute to the life of lifeguard and highly accomplished waterman, Eddie Aikau. And because of the event’s heritage and also due to the fact that it only runs when the waves are big enough – the last time being in 2016 – invitees that have the good fortune to get the nod in a year the event actually runs are often extra motivated to prove that they belong in the lineup with the rest of the world’s best big wave surfers.

Such was the case when Mason Ho got the nod for the last Eddie. During the event, Mase put on a show, but no single wave was more memorable than the one he got absolutely clobbered on.

Here, Mason dissects the wave and what went wrong in a classicly frenetic display of wild hand gestures and enthusiasm.
