The Inertia

Jake Burton didn’t just influence a generation. He inspired two or three of them by not just being at the forefront of sliding downhill sideways, but pushing for its inclusion at resorts worldwide. And now, 13 of them will offer a free day of riding for snowboarders to honor the Burton Founder.

On Friday, March 13 2020 seven U.S. resorts will be part of a, “Day For Jake” (sign up for your free ticket, here): California’s Bear Mountain and Boreal, Washington’s Summit at Snoqualmie, Montana’s Big Sky, Colorado’s Copper Resort, Michigan’s Boyne Mountain, and Vermont’s Stratton Mountain will all be part of the celebration

Burton’s bright mind, warm attitude, and a never-ending pursuit to innovate on the technical side influenced designers and brand managers from all realms of action sports, not just snowboarding. He basically helped create a lifestyle and his legacy will be celebrated for years.

“When I heard the news (of Jake’s passing) I thought back to the beginning and finding that snowboard in the basement of a  hardware store in Vermont,” Jeremy Jones told us when Burton Carpenter passed in mid-November. “It was an important, full-life shift because Jake worked so hard to place that board in that shop. It was 1982, so they weren’t in ski shops. Jake’s work on getting resorts to open up for snowboarding was another pivotal moment in my life.”
