The Inertia

Kolohe Andino and John John Florence both grew up under the weight of some serious expectations. One, a surfer who trains specifically for surfing; a father bent on creating a competitive monster. The other, a free-form kid who simply surfs and surfs obscenely well. Both freakishly good at riding waves. As time went on, of course, John John Florence went on to win back-to-back world titles while Kolohe struggled to find his place for a few years. But Kolohe has always been the man who could win a title. Back in 2019, John John and Kolohe came up against each other at the final of the Margaret River Pro, and it came down to the wire. The World Surf League recently decided that, since competitive surfing is a little quiet this year, they’d re-release a pile of extremely good heats. And this is one of them.
