Surfing at Shipstern Bluff, Tasmania, is an affair full of wipeouts. Tim Bonython is a legend in the surf footage world. He’s the guy behind the lens of lots of the big wave footage you’ve laid eyes on, and he’s been focussing on big and scary waves for a long time now.
Over the years, he’s amassed a sizable collection of realy bad wipeouts. As waves get heavier, so do the wipeouts. Since Bonython is often filming giant and scary waves, he’s also often filming big and scary wipeouts. He keeps that in the aptly named Terror Vault and drops clips from different places semi-regularly.
So far, we’ve seen Ours, The Right, and Teahupoo. Now, he’s stitched together some of the craziest moments at Shipstern Bluff. “When it comes to incredible big wave moments,” Bonython writes, “Shipstern Bluff, down the bottom of Tasmania, is on top of the list.”
Shippies is a dangerous place to surf, especially on those big days. Back in 2011, there were a handful of historic swells that lit the place up like a firework. Bonython was there, camera in hand. “Real 30 foot days down at Tasmania’s Shippies made it super dangerous, and that makes some very entertaining viewing,” he continued.
