The Inertia

Some pundits aren’t always thrilled with Main Break in Margaret River. It’s not as dynamic a wave as say, North Point, or the Box. But it has certainly provided this week at the Margaret River Pro in Western Australia.

Caio Ibelli and Italo Ferreira took advantage of unusually clean Main Break as they battled for a spot in finals day. It was back and forth, to be certain. Ibelli, who, if you’ve been watching, has been valiantly fighting for his CT life in the most spectacular fashion during the Oz leg, stuck to the traditional rail game. Italo meanwhile did what Italo does: looked for air sections when there were seemingly none. He found a solid one on his first ride and nearly landed a spectacular alley-oop later in the heat.

In the end it was traditional power surfing that won the day for Italo, sending him on to the quarter finals. It’ll be a day that’s loaded with CT talent with Seth Moniz, John John Florence, Jordy Smith, Ryan Callinan, Griffin Colapinto, Filipe Toledo and newcomer Matthew McGillivray joining the Brazilian.

Highlights were many, one of the most bizarre saw Jordy Smith nearly concede the heat to Julian Wilson before a small left came his way, allowing him to use his backend to propel him to the quarters.

On the women’s side, Steph Gilmore, West Oz local Bronte Macaulay, Carissa Moore, Tatiana Weston-Webb, Tyler Wright, Sally Fitzgibbons, Isabella Nichols, and Johanne Defay round out a loaded finals day.
