The Inertia

If you are ever on the North Shore, you’d be wise to follow this advice: don’t go swimming at Shark’s Cove if there’s a rising swell. Oh yes, when it’s flat and calm, Shark’s Cove is a placid little pool in which beautiful fish — and, if you’re lucky, turtles — flit around. It’s perfect for the snorkeling tourist. Or, if you’re Jamie O’Brien and there is a rising swell, it’s the perfect place to dodge rocks. When Jamie O’Brien surfs, he enjoys the rock dodging dance.

We suspect that the video you see above was mostly created because of the visuals and not so much because the wave is anything special. The wave on the outside of the cove is basically unsurfable, but it throws a little bump of water over the rocks that you can stand up on for a few seconds. But the resulting video is pretty incredible — huge plumes of water breaking above a handful of people on surfboards, trying not to cut their feet to ribbons. That last part? Unsuccessful.
