It’s been a few years of big changes, thanks to the Coronavirus. One of the changes the pandemic brought about was the format of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. It’s a good change. “A unique year calls for a radical change,” the company explained when it announced a brand new format for 2020’s rendition of the classic event.
The window opened up on December 21, 2020, and ran through the New Year until January 15, 2021. Competitors simply filmed themselves surfing at Pipeline, Sunset, and Haleiwa — the three venues for the classic Triple Crown — and submitted their best two waves from each spot. The overall winners were the ones who compiled the highest combined scores from all six waves.
As you probably remember, John John Florence and Carissa Moore won, which surprised exactly no one. John John Florence just re-released his waves from the Triple Crown 2020, and they’re just as good in the rearview at they were at the time.
