It’s no secret that John John Florence has an Achilles’ heel. His left knee isn’t in perfect shape, which isn’t all that surprising considering what he puts his joints through. He’s missed events, taken time out of the water, rehabbed the hell out of that bum knee, but it pays to be careful with such things, especially when your job requires it.
Still, though, when John showed up at G-Land and strapped on a pretty large piece of hardware, it raised a few questions. Questions that were quickly laid to rest when he dropped an excellent score of 8.17 and cruised through heat like a man… well, like a man without a knee brace.
He did explain what was going on in the post-heat interview, though. “Unfortunately yesterday morning I kind of tweaked my front knee. I think it’s the MCL. It’s been a little bit of an emotional rollercoaster. I was thinking about pulling out of the event… I went for a surf this morning and it started feeling a little bit better. I was like, ‘okay, I think I can do it.’ But I was just so nervous in the heat, because I didn’t know what it was going to feel like, really.”
