There’s just a day to go until the Corona Open J-Bay. John John Florence is already there. Trevor Hansen of the Next Offshore Adventure YouTube channel gave us a local’s-eye view of the contest preparations, as well as the pumping surf the region has had ahead of the comp.
“A week out from the start of the J-Bay Open,” says Hansen as he drives to the venue. “There’s a little bit of swell showing on the forecast [for the competition], not looking great. It’s not like it is today, that’s for sure. The guys will be crying for this swell during the comp period.”
Afterwards, he makes a walkthrough of the venue as construction crews continue setting up. The real magic happens when he gets to the beach, though. The water gets glassy, the waves start firing, and we get to see clips of rippers ripping in enviable conditions.
“Conditions were absolutely incredible, waves were firing. The guys were getting absolutely shacked through the impossible section and making it all the way down to the point on some of the waves,” sums up Hansen. “Perfect day. What a pity we’re probably not going to see the guys on these type of conditions in the comp. Let’s just hope Neptune sprinkles some magic and we get some good waves somewhere along the line.”
