The Inertia

Koa Rothman’s Australian tour has ended, but that doesn’t mean he’s going home just yet. The freesurfer and YouTuber recently made trips out to Deadmans and Cape Solander, where he was tested by the breaks’ notoriously heavy waves. Soon after, he hopped on a flight to Kandui Resort in the Mentawais, where he snagged what may have been the best barrel of his life.

The wave in question came during a marathon six and a half hour session. “I had that one super good one,” he described afterwards. “I was in the barrel and I watched this thing throw and the foam come up. I was like ‘Oh my god, I’m going to have to try to ride over this thing, or it’s gonna clean me out.’ I got just up on top of it an then it spit and I had no idea what the wave was going to do.” But he hung on for dear life and was launched out of the barrel, having caught what he called one of the better waves of his life.

“You really couldn’t ask for much more,” Rothman concluded. “You really couldn’t find that much better of a barrel anywhere around the world.”
