The International Surfing Association (ISA) and Saint Lucia Surfing Association announced Monday that the Caribbean island will become. the ISA’s 117th National Federation Member. The announcement clears the way for Saint Lucia to send its very first team to this year’s ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, which currently don’t have a set date or location, according to the ISA’s 2025 competition calendar.

Beyond that, however, Saint Lucia’s membership will give the island nation an opportunity to develop coaching, judging, and water safety courses, gender equality initiatives, youth athlete development, and more in an effort to grow the sport nationally. It will be the 11th ISA member from the Caribbean, adding its 158 kilometers of coastline to the ISA’s global reach.

“It is so exciting to welcome the beautiful nation of Saint Lucia into the ISA. The growth of surfing throughout the Caribbean has been wonderful to see and we welcome its continued expansion, especially within such a wave-rich region that holds so much opportunity for surfers across generations and disciplines,” said ISA President Fernando Aguerre. “Working with grassroots surfing communities in emerging surfing nations like this is integral to the ISA’s mission to create a better world through surfing and we look forward to seeing the amazing progress over the coming years.”

Saint Lucia Surfing Association President Shaid Frank Ambler added, “becoming a member of the ISA opens new doors for local surfers, coaches, and enthusiasts, ensuring the long-term growth and sustainability of surfing in Saint Lucia. It provides a platform for international competition, training opportunities, and global recognition, allowing the sport to thrive and inspire future generations.”
