The Inertia

San Francisco’s famously treacherous Ocean Beach has claimed another victim. Last week, a man tragically died at the Bay Area surf spot, after running into the waves to rescue a dog.

The incident occurred on Thursday, May 8 at Ocean Beach, near Lawton Street. According to the San Francisco Fire Department X account, 911 callers reported a fully clothed adult man entering the surf line to rescue a dog. When the man collapsed for an unknown reason, two women went to his aid. They managed to retrieve the man from the surf, after which they began providing life saving measures and called the authorities.

Ocean Rescue was dispatched, and arrived two minutes later to begin CPR on the man. Two minutes after that San Francisco Fire Department and Fire Paramedics also arrived to lend aid providing advanced life support measures. The man was then transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he eventually succumbed.

The dog the man had originally gone into the water to rescue “was able to exit the water independently and is OK.”

The SFFD added that “This is an unfortunate reminder not to enter the water for humans or pets but rather, to call 911.”
