A woman surfing at a Waikiki beach was sent to the emergency room in critical condition after going into cardiac arrest. Though first responders initially answered a call about a foot injury, things quickly took a much more serious turn on shore.
Honolulu Ocean Safety responded to a call around 4:30 on Tuesday afternoon, as the Star Advertiser reports. According to Honolulu Emergency Services, they were initially sent to attend to a surfer in her 50s who had “suffered a possible toe injury.”
However, after lifeguards helped the woman on shore, the situation turned out to be significantly more life-threatening than just an injured toe. The woman went into cardiac arrest, prompting EMS to perform CPR until she regained a pulse. From there, she was given advanced life support and taken to an emergency room in critical condition.
