An Orange County lifeguard endured a nearly catastrophic spill while attempting to save somebody near the Seal Beach pier recently. Footage of the incident that took place before the holiday weekend shows the lifeguard jumping from the railing then being swung back into the pier when his buoy got caught, leaving him hanging above the water.
“He dove in full force, and he just swung and hit the pole really hard. I was like, ‘Oh my god. Hopefully he’s still conscious,’” one witness told local KCAL News.
The guard was apparently jumping off the pier to save a civilian who had fallen or jumped into the water nearby and was in need of help. While the video of the mishap looks pretty terrifying, the lifeguard wasn’t hurt. He assured all the witnesses that he was ok after the slam and that’s when they helped him untangle himself. Once he was freed, he went on to help the distressed swimmer.
