Every once in a while, Apple flexes on the world with the capabilities of its iPhone cameras. The Shot on an iPhone brand campaign has been running for at least a decade now, but there are times when the movement picks up some extra steam and we’re collectively blown away by something we can’t believe was captured on the same tiny, addictive machine stored in our own pockets.
Entire feature films are shot on iPhones. And there are some brilliant images out there that were snapped with that little brick you inevitably have to replace every few years when you get too drunk on a Friday night (Tuesday night, most likely) and lose it. And the message can be as motivating as it can be deflating: you can do so much with so little. Like capture some world-class empty wave images, for example.
Most of us imagine thousands, tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment to get images like this swimming around in some slabby tubes. But Apple posted this clip last week to remind us that all you really need to do is forget to take your smartphone out of your shorts pocket when you jump in the water. Oh, that and a waterproof case…

The lensman here is no slouch though. While this entire campaign is designed to show us how much can be done with what’s become an everyday tool, the work that’s showcased tends to come from people with tremendous talent and a lot of experience. Photographer Ryan Pernofski definitely spends a lot of time swimming around in the ocean. And he clearly is no slouch who’s simply pointing and clicking like mom and dad on a family vacation. His collection of photos and videos is impressive, to say the least.
