The Inertia

The old adage advises to not bite the hand that feeds. Unfortunately, sharks are completely unaware of the concept, or of adages in general. Instead, a shark in Nantucket opted to bite a Massachusetts man, just as he was trying to bring it back to the ocean.

The shark bite victim was a 21-year-old man, according to The Nantucket Current. He first came into contact with the shark after reeling it in on the sand. However, when he grabbed the animal to release it back into the ocean, it twisted around and bit him in the leg, causing a serious, but non-life-threatening injury.

Shark biologist John Chisholm, of the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life, told the Nantucket Current that he had identified the shark as a sandbar shark. The coastal species ranges from Massachusetts to Brazil and can reach up to seven feet long.

First responders did not arrive on the scene, as the man elected to be driven to the hospital by a friend. From there, he was transported by helicopter to a mainland hospital to be treated for his injuries.
