Mason Ho Surfed The Wedge and Put on an Absolute Show

The Inertia

Whenever I see Mason Ho surf I’m reminded of a declaration filmmaker Logan Dulien made just a couple of years ago: Mason’s the most entertaining regular-foot on the planet. Logan chose his words carefully. He didn’t claim he’s the best — there are a hundred answers to that debate — but the most entertaining. And I can’t agree with him more.

Mason is creative, fun, well-rounded, and he approaches everything from a simple turn at Rocky Point to elevator drops at Pipe with a flare and style you just don’t find from anybody else. Every moment feels completely improvised, and for that reason, he’s one of the few people we all just stop what we’re doing to sit and watch when he’s on a wave. I can name dozens of world-class surfers with just as much ability that couldn’t get me to stop what I’m doing just because I know they’re paddling into a set. And that is where the distinction of being the world’s most entertaining regular-foot stands.

As far as waves go, the Wedge is in that same class. It’s a wave that you would just sit on the beach and watch even without a single person in the water. It’s why any time a south swell approaches overheard in Southern California you can bet money a KTLA news van is already parked somewhere on the Balboa Peninsula. It’s the cheapest, easiest guarantee a local news station in SoCal can get for catching some extra eyes on the 6 o’clock news.

Naturally, the two are a pair worth watching: Mason Ho x The Wedge.
