An English kite surfer has passed away after colliding with the side of a yacht. The tragic incident took place in Weymouth, a seaside town in Dorset, southern England.
The Weymouth Lifeboat Station was first informed that something was amiss around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. “Persons aboard a yacht anchored in the harbour had reported seeing a kite surfer in difficulty in the water,” wrote Weymouth Lifeboat Station in a Facebook post.
As the Telegraph reports, the man, believed to be in his 70s, was blown out of the water by high winds and thrown against the side of a moored yacht.
The lifeboat crew arrived to find a man being recovered from the water by a harbor patrol boat. He was then taken to the Portland harbor jetty, where first aid was administered. Soon after, a doctor pronounced him dead at the scene.
“Emergency services attended and very sadly one of the men, aged in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene,’ said a Dorset Police spokesperson. “Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this very difficult time.”
His death is not being treated as suspicious and his family has been informed. Police confirmed a second man involved in the incident was left in the care of the ambulance service, as the Daily Mail reports.
