The Inertia

Ferry boats getting smoked over remote offshore reefs in the South Pacific are common this time of year. With so many waves breaking offshore, they’re a crucial tool for getting traveling surfers to the lineups they’ve trekked untold miles to get to. They’re so prominent around those lineups though that accidents are practically a guarantee at some point.

Enter The Qualified Captain, a YouTube page which highlights how often boating accidents happen around the world. The Youtube page, podcast, and Instagram, are all geared toward showing how prominent accidents are in all aspects of boating as a tool for educating people.

“During a long workday out on the water, we regularly saw clueless acts from uneducated boaters who would refuse any help or advice,” reads the account’s history. “This led us to create an Instagram page that highlighted these incidents. A place where the rest of the world could laugh along with us and hold boaters accountable.”

A recent clip the outlet shared shows one ferry boat getting smoked by a cleanup set in Fiji. The driver is the only person in the boat at the time, so he’d probably just dropped surfers off in the lineup when it looks like a set rolled through on the outside. He zigged when he should have zagged, and the ensuing beating proves that you don’t need to be caught inside at 20-foot Cloudbreak for things to get hairy.

Like the caption on the Qualified Captain reads, “Bad Day in Fiji.”
