There’s a lot of times in surfing when you find out something was a bad idea after the fact. You attempted a rock off in questionable conditions, paddled out with not enough, or too much, foam, vastly underestimated how heavy the surf you were paddling out into actually was. It’s unfortunate, but also a learning experience.
Other times you do something because it was a bad idea. And nothing is learned at all.
The Sickos are a YouTuber collective that specializes in that second scenario. They make their living getting themselves in over their heads, whether it’s riding a jet-powered surfboard, towing behind an RC electric boat, or attempting to ride the world’s tallest foil board. Even with that resume to build off of, their latest stunt is particularly stupid. They attempted to surf a pedal boat.
Nobody needs to explain why a pedal boat is a terrible craft for surfing, but here’s a rundown anyway. Slow, cumbersome and flat out silly looking, the boats are more at home in man-made lakes than the ocean – a fact the Sickos readily acknowledged.
“They’re meant for literally a glassy pond,” explained Sickos member Will Crumpacker, as he crouched next to the craft. “I really think the second you’re going down a wave, water is going to hit right here and you’re going to nose dive. And then when you nose dive, you’re going to catapult forward. Then the boat’s going to land on you and you’re going to go over the falls with a 200 pound plastic boat.”
And you know what? That was pretty much exactly what happened. Check out the full video below.
