Last time we checked in with Ben Gravy, he was battling 20-foot behemoths kicked up by Hurricane Erin. The thing is, that wasn’t just a one-day event. Erin stuck around, bringing 15-foot-plus surf for a whole other day.
All of it was a sight to behold. In front of an eager crowd, barrels and hold-downs were dished out in equal measure. Gravy’s entire sequence on the Erin swell has an air of excitement, tinged with just a hint of very justifiable fear.
And then it was gone.
Just as soon as they came, the beasts in the East retreated. All par for the course for a hurricane swell, no matter how epic.
“The swell disappeared with the storm and the hard offshore winds,” explained Travis Beckmann. “That’s the East Coast for you. One day it’s frickin’ 10-plus, the next day it’s 3-4. Welcome to the East Coast.”
