The love affair between Nathan Florence and Ireland continues. The big wave surfer has been a regular at Mullaghmore of late, and a recent YouTube edit documents another surf expedition on the Emerald Isle. This time, what started off as a slog turned into something unexpectedly special when conditions did a total 180 and delivered an idyllic summer surf session for Florence and an unexpected crew.
At the outset, Nathan Florence and his wife and videographer Mahina Florence did not seem to be relishing the prospect of filming in what was shaping up to be a typically dreary morning. However, the first surprise came in the form of randomly encountering fellow Hawaiian charger Torrey Meister.
With Meister in tow, Florence took to the waves, while Mahina looked on from a nearby cliff. Then something magical happened.
“I don’t know how, but it started out as a rainy, cold morning, [and] the rain stopped, the sun came out,” explained Florence afterwards. “Me and Torrey got to surf this wave… I’ve surfed it before, but it’s just a really epic, heavy left-hander. A really difficult, technical drop. It ended up just being me and him out there in the session, for like two hours. Mahina up on the hill, in the sun, vibrant green Irish grass all around. We had a very special morning and an epic session.”
