The Inertia

It’s been an unusually quiet Atlantic hurricane season, but that hasn’t stopped Ben Gravy one bit. As with any east coast surfer worth his salt, the YouTuber and novelty wave surfer has been champing at the bit to take on whatever storms are on tap, no matter what the size and frequency. He even went so far as to set out to surf every single named storm of the year. With his latest video, Gravy gets to check Hurricane Gabrielle off his list.

Gabrielle ended an unusual dry spell in what was supposed to be peak Atlantic hurricane season. When it formed as a tropical storm, it marked the first named storm in weeks. Subsequently, Gabrielle strengthened to a full-fledged hurricane, prompting warnings of “life-threatening surf” from the NWS.

In terms of the kind of  surf that you can actually ride on a surfboard, the results of Hurricane Gabrielle were perhaps a little more modest than the cataclysmic-sounding warnings would lead the layperson to believe. However, that doesn’t mean that there weren’t some fun waves on tap. And if anyone knows how to make a dollar out of fifteen cents, it’s Ben Gravy.

“We’re just dealing with a little fog, but otherwise we fully scored,” concluded Gravy after two sessions. “Very stoked. Of course, I want to get massive barrels for a hurricane, but it is kind of fun to just be able to surf days in a row and practice your high performance surfing, because we never get to do that. We’re either novelty hunting or getting barreled.”

Check out how it all went down in the video below.
