Cornwall has long been the hub of English surfing. Now, with the advent of fall, arguably the prime season for surf in the region has started. However, the beginning of the season has already been marked by tragedy, as a Scottish surfer was found unresponsive in the waters off the Cornish coast.
As The Independent reports, the 63-year-old man was found at Gwithian Beach in Hayle at 5:30 p.m. on September 24. According to a police spokesperson, he had been surfing at the time of the incident. He was recovered from the water by lifeguards, and the ambulance service, air ambulance and Coast Guard responded.
“Despite the best efforts of emergency services the man was pronounced deceased at the scene,” said the representative. “The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
