There’s a new record for world’s largest shot ski. Park City, Utah, took its first shot in the annual battle with Breckenridge, Colorado, on Saturday, setting the new mark with 1,410 individual shots bolted onto 583 skis.
To recap, Breckenridge and Park City have been trading shot-ski high marks for a little more than a decade. Every year, one town gathers as many locals as possible to partake in a single, massive shot ski. By the end of the winter, the other typically claims a total at least slightly higher. The annual rivalry has gained so much attention — even though the Guinness Book of World Records doesn’t keep official records for alcohol-related marks that promote binge drinking — that Canada threw its hat into the mix last year too. Park City kicked off last season with a record of 1,385 people taking a shot together. In December, 1,401 Breck locals rallied together holding 503 shot skis bolted together to claim a new world record. Then, in April, 1,406 Canadians gathered at Mont-Orford, Quebec to edge out both of them.
According to one organizer of the Park City event, Canada’s claim to the world record doesn’t concern them because the rivalry between the Utah ski town and Breckenridge involves fundraising for their local charities. In doing so, they sell tickets to hopeful participants, and this year’s event was able to raise $70,000 for local non-profits.
“The group in Canada did a shot ski, and they just took a ski resort, pulled people off the hill, asked them if they wanted a free shot on a shot ski, and they said they set the world record,” said Mike Luers, one of the Park City event organizers. “They are not a charitable event like we are.”
Stipulations of the rivalry aside, it looks like Park City, Utah, has the new record by both the metric system and imperial measurements: 1,410 people.
Breckenridge’s next swing at the record will take place at Ullr Fest, which is scheduled for December 18-20, 2025.
