Newport, Oregon is not on the surfing map, per se. It’s not a place that people think about for surf vacations, or a getaway for the rich and famous. And guess what? That’s just fine by the local surfers. In Newport, you have to earn your waves. And filmmaker Casey Felton captured that reality to perfection.
The area around this Pacific Northwest surf hub is fairly rich in surf breaks, as the PNW goes. There are options. But as with any image maker knows, you have to find the most dedicated surfers, and essentially dedicate your time to them. Felton has spent a decade doing that, which helped make this film special.
“The trick is that you have to team up with really good surfers,” he told us. “It’s kind of a sacrifice. You got to sacrifice your time to go when it’s good, when they’re going. Because if you just randomly go, you get random results.”
And the result is the movie you see above, which premiered in Newport on October 9th to a pumped up, sold-out crowd. We now present it in full to you here on The Inertia. Enjoy this look at one of Oregon’s tightest surf communities.
