The Inertia

Sometimes it takes drastic measures to leave the crowds behind. For skiers and snowboarders, one of the ways to do that is to take to the skies. Though it has long been a means for particularly adventurous skiers to access remote terrain, heli-skiing has not been an option in California – until now.

The development comes from a brand known as Sweetwater Heli, which recently announced in a press release that it will be launching the first, and currently only, heli-skiing outfit in the Golden State.

The company plans to begin giving tours in January of next year. It will be operating out of Bridgeport, California – on Highway 395 pretty much halfway between Mammoth and Lake Tahoe. The company promises to grant customers access to 180,000 acres of new terrain in the Sweetwater Mountains that bridge the California and Nevada state lines.

“I’m incredibly excited to introduce a premium heli-ski experience to California. Having the opportunity for world-class heli-skiing right in our backyard is truly priceless and long overdue. Our team’s love for California and everything it offers makes this especially significant,” said Sweetwater Heli co-founder Brian Kirschenmann.
