The Inertia

The “Red Triangle” is one of the sharkiest places in the world. Located off the Central California coast, the roughly triangular area extends from Bodega Bay, north of San Francisco, out slightly beyond the Farallon Islands, and down to the Big Sur region, south of Monterey. Around 38 percent of U.S. shark attacks take place in that area. This weekend, a surfer just narrowly avoided being added to that statistic.

The incident occurred at Dillon Beach, around eight miles south of Bodega Bay. As The West Marin Feed reports, a surfer was paddling for a wave the morning of December 22, when a shark collided with the bottom of his board, lifting him out of the water and leaving a sizable ding.

In the wake of the incident, signs were posted warning beachgoers of elevated shark activity in the area.
