An Australian fisherman was filmed reeling in a large bull shark near a popular Sydney beach this week amid a wave of attacks in the region. That same fisherman, Joel Nancarrow, operates Hunter SHARK JAW Restoration, also posted footage of the catch from his boat. Nancarrow said the shark was 200 kilograms (440 pounds).

The catch occurred at Camp Cove in Watson’s Bay, known for “family-friendly” swimming. Nancarrow wrote online that he found the sharks quickly after arriving, and noted that there were people swimming in the cove while he was fighting to reel it in. Meanwhile, there were two other sharks swimming near the boat while beachgoers were in the water at the same time.

“These fish are rarely alone, if there’s one on the beach, there’s more, they are the hardest shark to spot in the water, they stick to the bottom, they rarely break the surface with their fins and only come up when they are about to feed,” he wrote on social media. “This one will cop some criticism but take it as you will. DO NOT SWIM AT CAMP COVE OR SHARK BAY!!!!!! I personally believe with the young fella being bitten while there were multiple people there jumping and splashing, could possibly mean that the shark is a resident on the stretch of beach that may attack due to being territorial. Usually lots of people in the water will actually intimidate the shark.”

The first attack in the region happened on Sunday, January 18. Two more attacks took place within the next 24 hours, and a fourth attack occurred at Point Plomer Beach, located 200 miles north of Sydney, prompting authorities to close several beaches Tuesday and Wednesday.

“If you’re thinking about going for a swim, think of going to a local pool because at this stage, we’re advising that beaches are unsafe,” Steven Pearce, the chief executive of Surf Life Saving New South Wales told members of the media.
