The Inertia

Two groups of hikers were rescued from a slot canyon in Washington County, Utah. The hikers, 15 in total, were found lost and suffering from extreme cold, but rescuers managed to take them to safety.

As KUTV reports, another group of hikers heard the lost group yelling from inside Yankee Doodle Canyon, around 4 p.m. on Saturday. The group called authorities, after which the sheriff’s office responded and found 10 hikers. A Washington County Search and Rescue team led eight of the group out by foot. Two others required an airlift out due to possible hypothermia.

However, that wasn’t the end of it. On the way back, the group actually ran into another group of five hikers that had also become lost. Three hours later, they reached the trailhead, and were able to return home without further medical assistance.

Sergeant Lucas Alfred with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said Yankee Doodle Canyon, “can get quite cold at all times except high noon,” adding that, “Without proper prep in the winter, even one as mild as what we have this year, hypothermia is always a concern.”

Yankee Doodle Canyon is in a remote area northeast of St. George, Utah.
