Australia has seen a spate of shark attacks in recent weeks, and it looks like it may be continuing. After a New South Wales beach was evacuated due to a shark sighting, a surfer was knocked over by the same animal.
The encounter occurred at Angels Beach, located on the north coast of New South Wales, Australia. As Sky News reports, Angels and several other beaches were closed following a shark sighting around 9:20 a.m. on Thursday.
“They deployed the drone to Flat Rock so they could have a look at what was going on and could not find anything,” Surf Life Saving Far North Coast Branch Duty Officer David Rope told the Ballina Shire Advocate. “Then at about 10:20 a.m. a surfer out surfing at the closed beach reported that he’d been knocked off his board by a big shark.” Rope added that it is believed the surfer made it back to the beach unharmed, and that the beaches will remain closed for the rest of the day.
Just over a week ago, New South Wales experienced four shark attacks over the course of 48 hours. Two of the victims escaped without serious injury, but 27-year-old Andre de Ruyter sustained “probably life-changing injuries” and 12-year-old Nico Antic sustained injuries so severe that he passed away several days later.
