An under-equipped night hiker found himself in need of a rescue in Summit County, Colorado this week. As the Denver Gazette reports, the rescue took place at Quandary Peak, the highest of the Tenmile Range in the Rocky Mountains at 14,271 feet.
According to a report from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, the office received a call from a solo hiker who had opted to forgo a headlamp in favor of his phone flashlight. When the light quickly drained his phone battery, he used what little he had left to call for help.
As Summit County Rescue Group mobilized a rescue team, a deputy used a drone to drop off a headlamp to the hiker. Unfortunately, the hiker took this as an opportunity to abandon the trail and head down the mountain (and lose a shoe in the process). This made it impossible for the rescue team to actually find him until he reappeared at the bottom of the peak.
From there, he was was given a ride to a hotel for the night, no worse for wear.
