Red Bull’s Heavy Metal has grown in status and attendance since the brand brought the decades-old street event back into the mix in 2022. That trend continues on Saturday at Boston’s City Hall Plaza with the Red Bull Heavy Metal Finals.
Two regional qualifiers had been scheduled leading up to Saturday’s headliner, but only one regional qualifier was held this winter (in Pittsburgh) due to cancellation of the January qualifier planned for Minnesota.
“Red Bull Heavy Metal brings riders who are not traditionally contest riders out to compete,” said comp director Joe Sexton. “Street snowboarders don’t always enter competitions, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t producing some of the heaviest riding. In the original Red Bull Heavy Metal contests, it was exciting to see the people from my favorite videos riding in a contest.”
Last year’s event in Boston reportedly drew more than 20,000 people out to City Hall Plaza. This year they’ll come back to the venue, which will again be transformed into a massive street snowboarding course once. Red Bull says the terrain park team is bringing 300 tons of snow to build the three riding zones for the downtown competition.
“Since the comeback of Red Bull Heavy Metal, it’s been amazing to watch how much the event has grown,” said last year’s Boston winner, Benny Milam. “Now with qualifiers, up and coming riders who are looking to make a name for themselves can earn their spot onto the main stage and show the world what they’re made of.”
