The Inertia

Leave it to skimboarders to look at a bone-breaking shorebreak and see nothing but opportunity. That’s exactly what happpened when the first major swell of the season rolled in to Cabo San Lucas, ready to be tamed by the likes of Blair Conklin and his merry band of shallow-water daredevils.

The aquatic antics took place at Lovers Beach, a punishing Pacific shorebreak known for its thundering surf and cavernous barrels. There, Blair was joined by five-time world champion Lucas Fink (who recently announced his sabbatical from competition, in favor of taking on big waves), along with a bevy of fellow skimmers and hangers-on. All ready to feel the energy.

“Cabo San Lucas is home to some of the most dangerous shorebreak waves in the world,” summed up Skimboarding YouTube channel Skid Kids in the caption to its video documenting the excursion. “The first major south swell of the season hits with extra power. The beaches have not seen a swell of this size all winter so when the first waves reach the built up sandy beaches they are extra loud and thunderous. Skimboarders from all over the world flock to these shores to test their abilities in the treacherous conditions. If you time it just right, you might be able to skim in to the largest waves of your life.”
