A 65-year-old skier from Portland has died after a fall while skiing at Oregon’s Mt. Bachelor on Monday. The news was initially reported via a statement from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim, whom officials identified as Nigel Young of Portland, was skiing with a group of friends on the Wanoga Way Ski Trail, which is reportedly an intermediate trail. The group was ahead of Young when the apparent crash happened, so reports thus far have been unable to clarify specifics of what led to the 65-year-old skier’s fall. Mt. Bachelor Ski Patrollers were first on the scene after receiving a call at 2:22 p.m. Young was wearing a helmet, they’ve reported, but was not breathing and had no pulse when rescue personnel arrived.

“Despite extensive resuscitation efforts by Ski Patrol and Bend Fire medics, the skier was pronounced dead at 2:56 p.m.,” the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office said.

On Wednesday, a representative for Mt. Bachelor told KTVZ News, “Our thoughts are with Mr. Young’s family and friends as they process this difficult loss. We are thankful to our patrollers and emergency first responders for their quick action and the medical assistance provided.”

Mt. Bachelor staff and the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office are still investigating the incident.
