The Inertia

Mt. Shasta Ski Area, California’s northernmost ski area, announced this week it is officially closing down early for the season due to unseasonable warmth. The decision puts an end to a brutally short season, which included a late start and other operation interruptions.

Mt. Shasta began its 2025-2026 season late on December 27, 2025. It had offered current season pass holders a guarantee of 60 days this year. That guarantee included an opportunity for pass holders to receive a credit back should the ski area fall short of the 60-day mark. Just six weeks later, Mt. Shasta shut down operations due to unseasonable warmth and a lack of snow. That closure was temporary, but so was its short-lived return to operations. On March 2, the resort announced yet another temporary closure.

“This is the update we were hoping to avoid, but unfortunately due to a rapidly deteriorating snow pack, the Mt. Shasta Ski Park will be suspending operations as of Monday, March 2 until we receive more snow. The forecast through mid March isn’t looking promising, but if it turns around our team will do everything we can to get you back on the slopes. Until then, pray for snow and believe in Miracle March,” read a release.

Fast forward one week and hopes for a Miracle March were abandoned.

“We have made the call to officially close for the season. We will not be reopening,” the resort said on March 10. “The forecast looks terribly warm with no precipitation at all. It’s just not gonna happen.”

That decision put the ski area at just 55 days of its goal of 60, giving season pass holders a chance for their credit — a hot topic among skiers this season, as many resorts across the West have experienced similar low-snow totals and drawn requests for larger season pass programs to give refunds or discounts to customers. Mt. Shasta officials said a rollover credit will be issued via a promo code.
