The Inertia

One shark is bad enough. In fact, thanks to Jaws, just a single fin cutting across the surface of the water has been able to strike fear into the hearts of surfers and swimmers for decades. Multiply that by 100, and you have the makings of sheer, pants-soiling terror.

And yet, that’s exactly what professional surfer Brett Barley encountered off the coast of Cape Point, North Carolina on Monday. While fishing from a personal watercraft, he came across a massive feeding frenzy of sharks noshing on baitfish. According to the caption of his Instagram post describing the incident, hundreds of the critters were eating the bait over a four-acre-wide area – then joined by a large school of red drum, a moment he dubbed “a full on Nat Geo moment if I’ve ever had one!”

Barley has long been a champion of North Carolina, whether it’s the surf, scenery or fishing. This moment was no different, as he wrote up in the caption to the wild video of the encounter.

“The things you see in Cape Hatteras never cease to amaze me!” he summed up. “Also, 10/10 would not recommend being in the middle of a ball of Spinner Sharks though. I’m very fortunate one didn’t sky right into me or all my gear.”
