An Australian cruise turned deadly last week. On a Carnival cruise ship making its way down the coast of Queensland, one passenger died and another went missing within hours of one another.
The incidents occurred aboard the Carnival Splendor, a 113,500-gross-ton ship operated by Carnival Cruises. The vessel was on a four-day cruise from Sydney, which would spend two days at sea and 10 hours at Moreton Island off the coast of southeast Queensland – a site known for its calm waters and snorkeling. As Cruise Hive reports, on Friday, a 67-year-old Tasmanian woman and passenger was found unresponsive during a snorkeling excursion. Attempts were made to revive her but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Carnival Cruise Line is deeply saddened by the death of a guest on Moreton Island on Friday,” the cruise line told local media. “Our Care Team is supporting the guest’s family during this difficult time.”
Just hours later, another passenger reportedly climbed over the ship’s safety rails and went overboard. A major search and rescue operation was kicked off when the man’s family were unable to locate him and alerted staff.
An investigation into the cause of the woman’s death is ongoing. However the two incidents are not believed to be linked.
