The Inertia

Cloudbreak is a wave that is every bit deserving of its epic name. But it never hurts to have a refresher on why. John John Florence, a man who knows better than most exactly why, and how, the Fijian wave is so special, broke it down in a new mini-documentary for his YouTube channel.

“It’s been really fun this year to be able to show up to places with no events or no major swell or anything going on, and you get to see the surf communities just how they are,” explains JJF at the top of the video. “Each one has been totally different and the wave kind of dictates a lot of that. It was really cool to show up to Cloudbreak and they are dedicating their lives to catching the best wave out there and being out there every time it has a possibility of being good.”

However, Florence doesn’t spend too long waxing poetic, before getting to the goods. From there, it’s a good ol’ fashioned surf edit, augmented by some Q&As with the aforementioned locals and a behind-the-scenes look at what goes down on the Florence boat.

In addition to surfing from the Florence clan, CLOUDBREAK features James Kusitino, Che Slatter, Sam Kaitabu, Mesa Kaitabu and Teo Degei. Check out the full video below. The mini doc is part of JJF’s six-part VELA series.
