The Inertia

The Austin Surf Club is apparently in trouble. Earlier this year, the celebrity backed Texas wave pool found itself struggling financially and a recent update has revealed it is only deeper in the hole now.

As the Austin Business Journal reports, Austin Surf Club Venture LP, the controlling entity for the pool, has racked up upwards of $16 million in construction liens. To get the project back on track, the landowners have filed a petition to establish a Municipal Management District to fund infrastructure improvements using property tax revenue. The text of the petition stated that the needed infrastructure costs were about $171 million.

In a world of overhyped wave pools, ASC still managed to stand out. The 333-acre development near Austin’s airport is to be powered by Kelly Slater Wave Co. technology and counts Matthew McConaughey, Tony Hawk and Drew Brees among its future residential property owners.

However, the first inklings of financial strife came back in April, when filings with the Travis County Clerk’s Office obtained by the Austin Business Journal revealed that contractors working on the project filed $4.6 million in construction liens for work done late in 2025 and early 2026. Around the same time, construction on the pool reportedly stopped.
