Jacob ‘Zeke’ Szekely loves wave pools. The La Jolla native has posted many an edit from various freshwater breaks. However, his latest visit to DSRTSURF in Palm Desert, California, was a little different. Becasue this time he was joined by a few famous friends.
“Basically, Wave Garden’s testing some waves,” explained Szekely. “So we’re going to get to design some new waves. We’re going to create a double air section on one wave. Then we’re going to create a barrel to air wave. Then the goal is to just make the biggest air section of all time today.”
To do that, Szekely shared the lineup with a murderer’s row of big names in surfing: Josh Kerr, Nathan Fletcher and none other than Rob Machado joined him in the water. True to form, the crew took to the air, employed their enviable rail games, and got barreled. Again and again.
More than once over the course of the day, Szekely stopped to just marvel at the position he found himself in. “Never in my life, dude,” he said. “If you would have told 15-year-old me, ‘Oh, yeah. I’d be surfing a wave pool, a hundred million dollar facility all by myself in the desert with my favorite surfer of all time, Josh Kerr, the goat of aerial surfing, coaching us and giving us tips and then going out there and showing us how it’s done.’ I’d be like, ‘You’re fucking dreaming. Get out of here.'”
