Sharks are out there. Even when we don’t see them, the ocean predators are often just on the periphery.
Most of the time, that’s fine, though. Despite the seemingly endless horror stories, violent shark encounters are still incredibly rare. Most often, the fish are just doing their own thing. And even when those encounters do become bloody, they’re often a case of mistaken identity or curiosity, rather than an actual “attack.”
However, that doesn’t mean they can’t be a little scary. As ABC News reported, a 10-foot shark was filmed swimming incredibly close to a group of Southern California children. And the incredible drone footage is enough to raise the hairs of even the most devoted shark lover.
The footage was filmed by none other than Carlos Gauna. Known as The Malibu Artist on YouTube, Gauna has made a cottage industry out of using drones to show off just how close sharks can get to humans. However, even though his wealth of experience has mostly inured him to sensationalism over shark encounters, this particular video had him a little on edge.
“I don’t normally get really excited or really nervous, because I’ve seen it play over and over,” said Gauna to Good Morning America, “but when it involves young adults and kids, I do get nervous. This shark was bigger than those kids.”
