It’s pretty rare to see a new trick in surfing. There’s a few innovations here and there (a progression greatly accelerated by the advent of wave pools), but it’s not often you see something that’s truly unique. Well, Leon Glatzer seems to have found out how to do that, because he just pulled off an air over five other surfers.
The stunt was took place at the German wave pool O2 Surftown MUC. The venue is an appropriate one for Glatzer, who was born in Hawaii and raised in Costa Rica (where he cut his teeth on the inimitable left-hand point break at Pavones), and now competes for Germany. Spurred on by his sponsor Red Bull, he lofted a high-flying air right over the backs of five would-be drop-ins.
Was it dangerous? Yeah, probably. Fin cuts are no joke, especially when there’s the very real possibility of them being lodged directly in your spine. On the other hand, it’s a move we’ve no doubt all dreamed of doing to a would-be drop in. And objectively, it just looks good.
What was Glatzer’s take? “This was a pretty crazy project,” he wrote in the caption to the video. “Happy it all worked out and we’re all safe and sound. I won’t do five again. Let’s do seven?”
