The Inertia

A portrait of the artist, Wyatt Conlon.

Life is too delicate to control. I strive to learn from what it teaches me and thrive from these lessons. Everything that happens naturally is inspiration for my work. No matter how certain events and interactions affect me, the fact remains that they still affected me. I still learned from them. The use of a medium-format camera forces me to take that time needed to gain true appreciation for what I witness every day. While my work and that of others may inspire me, life will always be my greatest inspiration.

The importance of observation may seem obvious in an art like photography, but presently, many forms of photography are based on an already thought of aesthetic. Photography is not a scavenger hunt. I do not know what my next photo will look like. I do not know where I am going to take it. I do not know what it is going to be of. Rather than constraining the scope of my work with these variables, my photos are driven by the available lighting and how it interacts with my surroundings. Everything around me becomes important. I will never know what my next idea will come from. So, as I approach my future work, all that I can do is observe and realize.
