The Inertia

The seven day waiting period for the 2013 Hurley Pro Trestles is set to start on Sunday September 15th and run through Saturday September 21st. This year’s Hurley Pro Trestles marks the 13th running of an ASP WCT sanctioned event at Lower Trestles, the last five of which have been title sponsored by Hurley.

The waves at Lower Trestles are widely known to be highly suited for both radical above the lip high performance and rail gouging power surfing with little or no opportunities for barrel riding. The Hurley Pro event held at Lower Trestles is greatly anticipated each year by both competitors and surf fans alike due to its point break “skatepark-like” rolling peaks which provide ostensibly limitless opportunities for the surfer to create and innovate, translating into excellent surfing action for all live and online viewers to appreciate.

Last year’s Hurley Pro Trestles was witness to Kelly Slater’s record-extending and milestone-reaching 50th ASP WCT victory as he defeated eventual 2012 ASP WCT Champion Joel Parkinson in a wave-starved and rather anticlimactic final. Since the 2012 running of the Hurley Pro Trestles, Kelly has gone on to win three additional ASP WCT events–the 2012 Quiksilver Pro France, the 2013 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, and the 2013 Volcom Fiji Pro.

Kelly’s dominance in professional surfing has no greater stage than Lower Trestles. Kelly has won the last three Hurley Pro Trestles events, and six of the last eight ASP Men’s WCT events held at Lower Trestles, making Lower Trestles a favored and frequent canvas on which Kelly has consistently confounded opponents and captivated surf fans. Kelly’s display of freakishly powerful high performance surfing, as well as his knack for consistently pulling off what only Kelly seems capable of pulling off, never disappoints nor gets old.

With a career, and yet another record setting, six ASP WCT event wins at Lower Trestles to his name, Kelly is the obvious heavy favorite for winning and thus defending his event title at the 2013 Hurley Pro Trestles. If successful, Kelly would secure his 54th ASP WCT event victory, win a seventh ASP WCT Trestles event title, and inch ever so closer to a 12th ASP WCT Title. Kelly will certainly be keen on preserving his title at the Hurley Pro event, particularly coming off his recent runner up finish at the Billabong Pro Tahiti. An event result that situated Kelly back on top of the ASP WCT rankings, but seemed to leave the ultra-competitive Kelly visibly displeased and vastly voracious for retribution. This combination of perceived sentiments from the 11-time World Champ will just add to the already intense competitive crescendo at the 2013 Hurley Pro Trestles.
